How to Become a Travel Cath Lab Tech

To become a travel cath lab tech, the journey typically begins with graduating from an accredited cardiovascular technology or radiologic technology program, earning an Associate’s or Bachelor's degree, and passing the relevant national examination—such as the Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) exam—to obtain certification. Following certification, aspiring cath lab techs must gain hands-on experience in a healthcare facility to master skills like maintaining sterile fields, monitoring hemodynamics, and operating fluoroscopic imaging equipment during procedures. Many professionals also choose to advance their careers and marketability by gaining experience in specialties like electrophysiology or interventional radiology, or by earning advanced credentials such as the Cardiac Interventional (CI) or Vascular Interventional (VI) certifications. Once established with the necessary experience—typically at least 12-24 months in a chosen clinical specialty—and credentials, cath lab techs can partner with a travel agency, like Nomad, to find assignments that fit their career goals and lifestyle.
