The 10 in-demand travel clinician specialties in Q4 2023

Based on Nomad Health’s job data, these are the the most in-demand specialties healthcare facilities sought to fill in Q4 2023, as calculated by the percent of unique new jobs (including allied health) posted on Nomad Health during this period, and compared to Q3 2023.

Topping the list in both quarters is Med-Surg, not surprisingly as this is the top specialty in the U.S. The only notable difference quarter-to-quarter is Labor & Delivery fell out of the top 10 in Q4, after the completion of summer baby season. Additionally, we continue to see strong demand for allied health professions, such as Radiology Technologists and Surgical Technologists, and Nomad was one of the first digital marketplace to offer Allied Health jobs.

Top states for travel clinician jobs Q4 2023

We sought to understand which states are most in need of travel clinicians, and how that shifted in the last few months of the year. Data was calculated by the percent of unique jobs by state added in Q4 2023 as compared to Q3 2024. Topping the list for the second half of this year was California, with even more jobs cropping up in the state in Q4. With so many travel clinicians flocking to warmer climates, the uptick in jobs in California bodes well for them.

In Q4, Ohio was in slightly greater need of travel clinicians, versus the previous quarter. Anecdotally, local wait times for EDs in Ohio were spiking around the holiday season with COVID rates increasing, and facilities likely wanted to staff up accordingly. Additionally, there was also an increased demand for nurses in Q4 in Illinois. Interestingly, here there were nursing strikes in the state in November, which could have correlated with an increased need for temporary staff.
