Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital was established in 1886 and became a Methodist Health System affiliate in 1994. Today, it is a 236-bed regional health care center serving approximately 250,000 residents in western Iowa. Jennie Edmundson employs a workforce of over 800 full- and part-time employees, and it has an active medical staff of more than 180 physicians. It offers accredited programs in stroke and cardiovascular services, and it is the only hospital in the region that offers nationally accredited cancer and breast cancer programs. The hospital’s Emergency Department, which is a Level III trauma care facility and offers 24/7 care, treats more than 23,000 patients per year. Jennie Edmundson performs more than 10,000 inpatient and outpatient surgeries per year while surpassing nearly 700 births annually. The hospital also currently has a 24-bed inpatient adult behavioral health unit, and a new 96-bed behavioral health hospital – a partnership between Jennie Edmundson and Acadia Healthcare – is slated to open in Council Bluffs in 2026. Jennie Edmundson is also committed to being a leader in women’s services in western Iowa. In June 2020, the Methodist Jennie Edmundson Medical Plaza opened on the hospital’s campus, offering a medical office building that is home to primary care and women’s health providers, as well as imaging and urgent care services. In December 2020, the Women and Newborns Unit debuted at the hospital, offering an entire floor dedicated to women’s services. In 2024, a new cardiovascular suite was completed at Jennie Edmundson. The updated technology and new catheterization labs and procedure room are significant enhancements for providers specializing in cardiology, allowing the hospital to provide more services to even more patients.
