Rehabilitation Services: ACUTE INPATIENT REHABILITATION UNIT This 30-bed unit offers advanced therapy equipment and friendly staff to help people who are unable to perform normal daily activities because of stroke, head injury, fractured hips, spinal cord injury, neurological disorders, major multiple trauma, amputation, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other debilitating conditions resulting in loss of independence in self-care and mobility. OUTPATIENT REHABILITATION SERVICES Baptist Rehabilitation DeSoto: physical, occupational and speech therapy; treatment for neurological disorders, orthopedic conditions and pain management; pediatric therapy; wound care; work conditioning and industrial rehabilitation; BTE Primus; vestibular (inner ear) therapy; pulmonary (breathing) rehabilitation; VitalStim® (for swallowing); neuroprosthetic and rehabilitation technology for stroke patients. DeSoto Athletic Club (DAC): physical therapy and treatment for neurological disorders, orthopedic conditions and pain management; pool therapy; strength and cardio training equipment; sports medicine; work conditioning. Rehabilitation Garden: The simple process of growing flowers and vegetables on the Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto campus helps rehabilitation patients to increase mobility, endurance, strength/muscle tone and motor coordination. Gardening activities have also been found to help build memory, attention, concentration, correct sequencing, and problem solving as well as name and color identification. Patients also interact socially by participating in group activities, all of which help to alleviate depression and build self-esteem and motivation. PULMONARY REHABILITATION SERVICES Baptist DeSoto offers outpatient rehabilitation services for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, chronic bronchitis and other serious lung diseases. The program offers patients instruction on proper breathing techniques, conserving energy in daily living, identifying the signs of fatigue and exercises that will build endurance.
