Looking for adventure on the road as a travel nurse? Follow the journey of two friends who take on new travel assignments together! Discover the ups and downs of traveling with a companion, and learn how these nurses navigate new destinations and new job challenges.

“They always call us the dynamic duo,” says Shelby Liddell, RN, referring to her friend and travel partner, Nora Enrique, RN. The two had recently wrapped up their travel assignments at a facility in Asheville. “They were trying to get us to come back!”

Liddell and Enrique met early in their healthcare careers, back in 2010 while working at the same nursing home. Enrique was working as a LPN, and Liddell as a CNA. Since then, the two have become Registered Nurses and worked in orthopedics, general-surgical, and medical-surgical nursing. Today, they both call Florida home.

Enrique got into nursing as a way to provide for her family. She felt it was an industry that would never go away, and provide security. Liddell was drawn to healthcare from the beginning. 

“I wanted to be a physician, and then I didn’t want to be in school that long,” Liddell laughs. “But I wanted to take care of people.”

About two years ago, the two transitioned to travel nursing. 

At the time, Liddell was a nurse educator, and she wanted to return to the bedside. Plus, Liddell and her husband were looking to buy a house. “Traveling definitely provided a lot of higher income for us to be able to make that dream come true,” she says.

Pay transparency is something that stuck out to Liddell when choosing to travel with Nomad Health.

Enrique and her husband were also on the hunt for a forever home, but weren’t sure whether or not they wanted to stay in Florida. Traveling together isn’t without its challenges. It can sometimes be difficult to get contracts at the same time in the same facility, but they’ve found that there’s usually a way to make it work. Another challenge is finding short-term housing that’s affordable, and big enough. They both stress that the good that comes from having a travel partner far outweighs the hiccups.

“It makes it 100% easier,” says Liddell. “It makes starting at a new place, when you don’t know anyone at work, a lot easier."

Travel nursing can get lonely; it’s a lot of goodbyes, and a lot of being the “new kid.” There’s an incredible sense of security that comes from having someone to share the ups and downs with.

“It makes being away from home a lot more bearable,” Enrique adds. 

“I’ve wanted to go to Texas for a long time,” exclaims Liddell. “You’re obsessed with Texas!” Enrique laughs, who then adds, “I’d love to go to South Dakota, that’s where my mom is, that’s where my sister is.” 

The two make it clear that at the end of the day, they’re open to going just about anywhere.

Ensuring that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, or Asexual (LGBTQIA+) individuals have access to the care that they need is an essential part of providing healthcare. While the future of healthcare evolves towards comprehensive awareness and inclusive care, there are plenty of things you can do to make sure you deliver the best care possible.

According to the nation’s largest LGBTQIA+ civil rights organization, The Human Rights Campaign, LGBTQIA+ patients face unique barriers to accessing healthcare. The 

 group found that 56% of lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals report serious discrimination cases when receiving healthcare and 70% of transgender patients report discrimination. In 2020, The Human Rights Campaign’s Healthcare Equality Index reported that only 67% of participating hospitals were found to have a “patient non-discrimination policy that includes both “sexual orientation” and “gender identity.”” Of these same hospitals, only 63% had an LGBTQIA+ inclusive employment non-discrimination policy in place.

Nurses Week was celebrated in 1954 to mark the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s mission to Crimea. The following year Congress introduced a bill to make the celebration an annual one but failed. The bill once again failed in 1972 and in 1974 President Nixon failed to designate the first week of February to celebrate nurses. It wasn’t until 1982 that President Reagan designated May 6th National Nurses Day. In 1990, the holiday got expanded into a week, May 6-12, by the American Nurses Association (ANA).

It has never been more important to recognize our nurses, thank them and honor them this Nurses Week. In honor of Nurses Week, Nomad will be recognizing 3 incredible nurses for their outstanding contributions as caregivers. It’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, also known as AAPI Heritage Month, a month-long celebration to recognize and commemorate AAPI heritage. Asian/Pacific is a broad term referencing all of the “Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, and Easter Island)” according to 

. This national initiative recognizes the history, contributions and challenges faced by the AAPI community. The healthcare industry relys on the AAPI community with nearly 8.5% of healthcare workers coming from the AAPI community compared to 6.8% of the U.S. population. Kay Fukuda was a naval cadet nurse who during World War II was interned at Manzanar War Relocation Center in California. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Manzanar War Relocation Center was on of 10 internment camps where 110,000 Japanese Americans were unjustly incarcerated by the U.S.

Li Hong graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with her MSN in nursing informatics. In 2019 she was awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal, the only Chinese recipient out of 29 nurses worldwide to receive the award. This award highlights nurses in public health or nursing education that represent exemplary service and innovation. Li Hong is also an American Academy of Nursing fellow and a current manager of clinical research at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Julita Villaruel Sotejo was born in 1906 and developed the nursing model of education in the Phillippines. In 1929 she graduated as valedictorian of her nursing school class and then graduated again, as valedictorian at Philippine Law School. She went on to become the principal of the Philippine General Hospital School of Nursing until she return to school after accepting multiple notable scholarships. She continued her education at the University of Chicago and graduated with a master’s degree in nursing administration. In 2003, Sotejo died at age 97, having earned a doctorate in law at the age of 85 and leaving behind a legacy of advocating for injustice in education and nursing.

Anastacia Giron-Tupas was born in 1890 in Laoag, Ilocos Norte. She was passionate about the power of nurses to improve general welfare and dedicated her life to advancing Philippine nursing. She worked to support interdisciplinary education in the nursing profession. She became known as the, “Dean of Philippine Nursing” and documented her efforts for change nursing in the Philippines in her book, “History of Nursing in the Philippines”. She is also responsible for creating the first bachelor of science in nursing curriculum at the University of Pennsylvania School of Public Health. She died in 1972 at the age of 82.

Mary Frances Oneha spent 20 years serving Native Hawaiian communities focused on understanding Native Hawaiian health issues. She attended the University of Washington where she earned a MSN and was the first Native Hawaiian to earn a Ph.D. In 2012, she joined the Waimānalo Health Center as the chief executive officer. Additionally, she serves on the Institutional Review Board of the Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations. In 2013, Oneha was recognized by the White House as an AAPI Woman Champion of Change and was an American Academy of Nursing fellow.

April is Stress Awareness Month and for most people stress has become a part of the average twenty-first-century life. This has become even more evident through the course of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to 

 of 1,501 U.S. adult workers, 79% of workers reported having work-related stress with 3 in 5 employees reporting negative impacts from work-related stress. Healthcare workers have experienced a uniquely hard past couple of years as frontline workers during the pandemic. A 

 study reported that more than 70% of healthcare workers experienced symptoms of anxiety and depression with 38% showing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. So, how do we learn to destress?

Everyone has experienced stress in their lives however chronic stress, or “a consistent sense of feeling pressured and overwhelmed over a long period of time,” according to Yale Medicine, can become a health concern. Over time, chronic stress can lead to more serious health problems so it is important to try to identify potential stressors in your life. Here is a list of common workplace stressors:

Additional stressors may include the death of a loved one, divorce, financial problems, chronic illness/injury, or unexpected life events.

Stress can manifest in the body in different ways. Stress hormones can wear down your body causing increased aging and illness. Other physical signs may be headaches, fatigue, difficulty sleeping or concentrating, upset stomach, and irritability.

Self-care is any intentional activity to provide ourselves with physical and mental well-being and is important in learning how to handle stress. Learning how to manage your stress levels is hard and will look different for each person. Choosing what works best for you is based on your goals, motivation, and lifestyle. Self-care is important for everyone but especially for healthcare workers who spend all day caring for others. Reducing stress levels through self-care can help a nurse provide compassion, improve the quality of care, and is even recommended by the American Nurses Association in its Code of Ethics.

It is often hardest to practice self-care when you need it most. You may not feel like it is a priority but it is crucial to maintain personal physical and mental health. As healthcare providers, it is important that you look after your needs so that you can continue to take care of others. While all healthcare providers face stress and uncertainty we each have our own realities and experiences so it is important that you do not compare your self-care to others.

When life gets stressful, sometimes you need more than self-care. If you are feeling like you may need some extra help, here are some resources to look into.

As a healthcare worker, you may be exposed to additional and unique forms of stress. Once you recognize that you are feeling stressed, consider what actions you can take to cope with the situation. Remember that even small acts of self-care can make big differences in your life. Working on ways to address stress and combat them can help you live your best life. According to Nerd Wallet, a 401(k) is a retirement saving and investing plan that employers offer. This plan allows you to contribute money directly from your paycheck into the funds you choose and helps you save for retirement. These funds are then given a tax break for being part of your 401(k) contribution. Depending on the plan you have these tax breaks may come when you contribute money or when you withdraw the money for retirement.

By contributing to a 401(k) plan you can save on your federal income taxes. Since contributions to your 401(k) are taken straight out of your paycheck before taxes, your total taxable income decreases, which means you owe less in income taxes. These pre-tax contributions get tax-deferred until your retirement when you decide to withdraw them. And your contributions are automatic which makes saving simple and effortless!

You get to control how much you want to put into your account and you have the flexibility to change your contributions levels whenever you see fit. Furthermore, your previous savings belong to you and you can transfer them straight to Principal so you get to keep any previous retirement plan earnings you had.

The earlier you set up your 401(k) the quicker your money can grow. Your savings can also collect compound interest. This is when you earn interest on the principal amount of your investment plus any accumulated interest. This can have a big impact on long-term investments and can be powerful when it comes to retirement.

Any travelers currently on assignment with Nomad are eligible for our 401(k) plan. In fact, clinicians are eligible starting the first day of their assignment! Clinicians can enroll by:

Non-stipend wages; i.e. wages earned from time worked (or on-call) are eligible for your 401(k) contributions, however, housing, meals, and incidental per diem stipends are not eligible wages. Of your eligible wages, Nomad clinicians can contribute up to 100% of their eligible wages. If you decide to change your contributions- no worries! Nomad clinicians can change their contributions as frequently as they want. Once you make a contribution change you should account for a 1-2 week delay so Principal can correct your contributions with Paycom.

Nomad also offers employer matching for your 401(k) savings. Travelers who have been with Nomad for at least 12 months and have completed at least 1000 service hours are eligible to have their contributions matched. The 12 month period starts from your 

 assignment start date, so if you’d like to take a break between assignments, your eligibility won’t be impacted. Once you qualify, Nomad will match 50% of the first 3% of contributions, and this employer match vests immediately.

Saving for retirement may seem scary but it doesn’t have to be. There are a lot of unknowns when it comes to the future but your retirement is something that can be easier to predict. It can be painless to set up money to contribute to your 401(k)- even if it’s a very small amount- and watch your savings grow over time.
