Thinking about Taking a Travel Assignment?

Congrats you have accepted an offer! Now it’s time to complete your Credentialing Checklist and get you one step closer to the job of your dreams. Let’s take a look at exactly what you need to do. 

Once you have accepted the offer, your Credentialing Checklist lists all of the requirements that the facility needs in order to start your assignment. After you accept your offer, you will receive a credentialing checklist which will be accessible by clicking on the notification icon at the top of your Nomad profile page. You can also access your credentialing checklist by clicking the link provided to you in your email, the email subject will be 

“[Action Required] Credentialing Requirements”

How to Complete  the Credentialing Checklist:

Once you have navigated to your Credentialing Checklist you can begin uploading your relevant documents. On your checklist, please proceed to click the upload button to upload documents. First try using the “saved documents” if you have an existing credential you can re-use. Otherwise, please upload a new file for the requirement.

Drug Testing and occupational Health items

To complete a drug screen or other occupational health items that may be required for your upcoming assignment you can work with your Compliance Associate to complete these tasks in a timely manner. Once you accept your assignment, you will be prompted to provide a zip code through the Messages section of your Nomad profile. Your Compliance Associate will work with you to locate a convenient location to complete your requirements. If you need to make any changes, please let your Credentialing Associate know.

Testing (emailed to you after the offer is accepted)

Relias testing is used to assess core clinical, situational, and behavioral competencies for nurses. Your Relias checklist is emailed to you after submitting an application. This email contains a link to the Relias checklist or exam. Once you click this link you will be directed to your Nomad account if you are not already logged in. Log in with your Nomad credentials and you will then be directed to Relias to complete your checklist or exam. You can also access the Relias checklist through the “Applications” button at the top right of your screen and then clicking the “Your Actions needed” banner underneath your application. 

After completing the Relias Checklist you will receive a score out of 4.0. A score of 2.7/4.0 or above is considered proficient, any score below that will prohibit you from applying to a job in that specific for 6 months. If you pass the checklist, you will be considered proficient for the next 12 months. If you have already completed your checklist through another agency feel free to email your results to nomadnavigators@nomadhealth.com and we can upload it to your account for you.

During your credentialing process you will be sent a Relias Assessment. Like the Relias checklist, this assessment will follow the same process of logging as the Relias checklist so please use your Nomad credentials to log in. To start your assignment you will need to score 80% or above on this assessment. You will receive two attempts to complete the assessment. If you do not score an 80% or above, your assignment will be cancelled and you will not be able to work in that specialty for the next 6 months. If you have completed the assessments in the past 12 months through another agency, go ahead and send them to compliance@nomadhealth.com and they can be used to future applications.

Once you have submitted all required credentials, Nomad’s credentialing team will review them and submit them to the facility for approval. If any of your credentials are declined, we will notify you so that you can upload a new document to fulfill the requirement. If you have additional questions regarding your Credentialing Checklist you can reach out to your Credentialing Associate via the Messages section of your Nomad profile. That’s it! According to Nerd Wallet, a 401(k) is a retirement saving and investing plan that employers offer. This plan allows you to contribute money directly from your paycheck into the funds you choose and helps you save for retirement. These funds are then given a tax break for being part of your 401(k) contribution. Depending on the plan you have these tax breaks may come when you contribute money or when you withdraw the money for retirement.

By contributing to a 401(k) plan you can save on your federal income taxes. Since contributions to your 401(k) are taken straight out of your paycheck before taxes, your total taxable income decreases, which means you owe less in income taxes. These pre-tax contributions get tax-deferred until your retirement when you decide to withdraw them. And your contributions are automatic which makes saving simple and effortless!

You get to control how much you want to put into your account and you have the flexibility to change your contributions levels whenever you see fit. Furthermore, your previous savings belong to you and you can transfer them straight to Principal so you get to keep any previous retirement plan earnings you had.

The earlier you set up your 401(k) the quicker your money can grow. Your savings can also collect compound interest. This is when you earn interest on the principal amount of your investment plus any accumulated interest. This can have a big impact on long-term investments and can be powerful when it comes to retirement.

Any travelers currently on assignment with Nomad are eligible for our 401(k) plan. In fact, clinicians are eligible starting the first day of their assignment! Clinicians can enroll by:

Please allow up to 1 week for your information to be processed by Principal. If you have any issues, you can call Principal for help at 800.547.7754 7am-9pm CST, Monday - Friday.

Non-stipend wages; i.e. wages earned from time worked (or on-call) are eligible for your 401(k) contributions, however, housing, meals, and incidental per diem stipends are not eligible wages. Of your eligible wages, Nomad clinicians can contribute up to 100% of their eligible wages. If you decide to change your contributions- no worries! Nomad clinicians can change their contributions as frequently as they want. Once you make a contribution change you should account for a 1-2 week delay so Principal can correct your contributions with Paycom.

Nomad also offers employer matching for your 401(k) savings. Travelers who have been with Nomad for at least 12 months and have completed at least 1000 service hours are eligible to have their contributions matched. The 12 month period starts from your 

 assignment start date, so if you’d like to take a break between assignments, your eligibility won’t be impacted. Once you qualify, Nomad will match 50% of the first 3% of contributions, and this employer match vests immediately.

Saving for retirement may seem scary but it doesn’t have to be. There are a lot of unknowns when it comes to the future but your retirement is something that can be easier to predict. It can be painless to set up money to contribute to your 401(k)- even if it’s a very small amount- and watch your savings grow over time. If you've decided you want to become a travel nurse, you’ve come to the right place. Read on for the 5 stages of becoming a travel nurse and how to make sure you’re set up for success.

Travel nurses are nurses who work temporary assignments around the country throughout the year. These assignments are typically 13 weeks long and are a great way for nurses to gain experience in a variety of locations, facility settings, and different patient populations.

There are a number of great reasons to start travel nursing - whether you’ve just begun your career or you’re a seasoned professional - including:

But just having the experience won’t guarantee that you will get the position - so take some time to build up a strong foundation and bolster your resume. This includes things like:

This information will be required by any position you apply to, so just having it handy will make the process much faster.

After you’ve submitted your initial application, the facility will be reviewing your application and your

Take this chance to review the details well - it’s your last chance to make any amends. Once everything looks right, respond with your written agreement to receive your contract.

Once your contract is signed, you will be asked to fill out a compliance checklist. This should be quick to complete if you already have all your requirements ready to go.

And that’s it! The only thing left to do is get excited for your first day! You should receive an email from your Nomad Navigator with first-day information before you begin your assignment.

You might be asking, "Why do you need my social security number?". This is required by the hospital to run background checks on all candidates that may come to work at their facility. Any information provided to Nomad is stored within our secure servers and not shared or sold to any external organizations other than the parties that process the application.

Have a lot of student loans to pay off? Travel nursing on average tends to pay more than staff nurse positions. According to Glassdoor, the 

 is about $76.7k. It’s a great way to make some more money to put towards your loans.

If you’re new to travel nursing, the sheer amount of information out there can feel more than a little overwhelming. Moreover, not all of it is accurate, which only adds to the confusion.

’s Director of Business Development for nursing, I have personally had the opportunity to learn about the pain points that travel nurses feel from the many conversations I’ve had with our nurse clients. This research has felt particularly significant to me, as my mother (photo above) and aunt are both nurses, and I am intimately aware of the incredible work that nurses perform.

To help set the record straight, I’ve outlined some of the most common myths, along with the real answers. In almost every case, you’ll find that the facts are clearer, easier, and more inclusive than the fiction:

1. Myth: Only young nurses go on the road.

Fact: Travel nursing draws nurses throughout their careers.

Travel nursing definitely has a strong appeal for younger nurses who might want to try living in a few different places before making a choice, but that’s by far not the only demographic. Because travel nursing is flexible and pays well, we also see a lot of mid-and-late career nurses who are looking to work a few months and then take a few months off, or who are interested in exploring different parts of the country. And here’s an interesting point: In our conversations with active travel nurses, many have noted how much they dislike internal facility politics. Traveling allows them to stay above the fray and focus on what they like most - providing care to patients! 

Fact: A travel nursing job can be as close as an hour away by car

While many nurses say that the chance to live in wildly different parts of the country is part of the fun, by definition, a travel nursing position need only be least 50 miles from a nurse’s home, thus requiring the nurse to “travel” to the facility. To accommodate for this, a nurse will receive reimbursement for travel expenses and very competitive wages. 

3. Myth: Assignments don’t last long and never turn into permanent jobs.

Fact: Typically, a travel assignment is for a 13 week contract, which can be extended if both the facility and the nurse decide to do so.

Some nurses also return to the same facility year after year, which affords them the benefits of seasonal travel, such as a mountainous area during the winter ski season, or to a beachy locale in the summer. Travel nurses are afforded the ability to head to desirous locations.

4. Myth: Finding housing in new areas is difficult.

We know that having as much information about a job is crucial in making a decision, so we list as much information as possible. Each of our job descriptions include some photos of the hospital and surrounding area, as well as information about the facility, pay, assignment length, and schedule. 

The hourly pay rate that you see on our jobs is a 

 The first segment is the non-taxable weekly stipends which includes housing, meal and incidentals. This amount is set by the GSA based on the cost of living in the area the job is located and will be received each week regardless of how many hours you work.

You can calculate an estimate of your “take home pay” by subtracting any applicable state and personal taxes from the taxable portion of the pay and adding it to the non-taxable portion.


Outside of this pay, we also offer a reimbursement of up to $1000 to get to your assignment based on miles traveled. For the exact mileage reimbursement rates, visit the GSA website 

The start date that is listed on our jobs is the goal start date from the hospital. Unless “ASAP Start” is listed in the title of the job, there is typically some flexibility of about 1-3 weeks after the start date. Sometimes, the listed start date for a job will pass, but the job will still be up on Nomad. This doesn’t mean the job is no longer available. If a job is closed or filled, we remove it from our website so you can no longer see it. If a job is still listed on Nomad, it is still available.


Beneath the compensation table, there are details about the hours and shifts. We list the contract length (most commonly 13 weeks), the shift times, and the expected hours. In most cases, the expected hours are 36 per week, which is the average amount of hours you will be expected to work while on assignment.

With so many great opportunities to choose from, it can be hard to know which one is the best fit for you. Below is a list of things that we have found help make for a good fit: 

In order to be considered for an opportunity on Nomad, you will need to submit an application within your Nomad account. To do this, click into a job and then click the blue “Apply” button on the right side. This will walk you through all the necessary sections and documents that we need. 


If you have already started filling out your profile, the information will be automatically transferred over so you will not need to enter it again. 

We will not send your information to any hospital or position that you do not apply for; you are always in the driver’s seat for which jobs you want to be considered for.


Submitting a complete application is a crucial step in getting a job on Nomad. There are multiple sections in the application, and it is best to take the time to complete each of them fully so you don’t have to go back and add or change anything. You will only need to fill out an application once, and then you will be able to one-click apply for all other jobs on Nomad.

This section asks for details like your address, phone number, and resume. For your resume, make sure to upload the actual resume file (PDF, Word Document, etc.), not a picture of your resume. 

This is also where you will enter when you are available to start an assignment and put in any requested time off. It is important to have these details available up front, as these are crucial details in a hospital’s consideration of your application. Your requested time off will need to be approved while your application is being considered as that information will be included down the line in the offer and contract stage.

The hospitals that we work with also require entering a photo of yourself along with your SSN. This information is encrypted and secure, and is only used as a form of identity verification.


You will be able to enter your state licenses and certifications here. If you have a compact license, you will not need to indicate this anywhere. We pull a license report from Nursys to accompany your applications, and this contains the status of your licenses and indicates whether they are multi-state or single state.

For your certifications, you may have one that is not an option listed in the selection tab. If you would like to have it included in your file, simply send it to 

 and we can have it included with your applications.


We ask a series of questions about your clinical experience and licenses along with any actions taken against them. It is important that you answer these questions truthfully, as any discrepancies can result in the suspension of your Nomad account.


For the education portion, please enter all levels of education you have received. If you have achieved an MSN, make sure to list your ASN and BSN as well.
