 of 1,501 U.S. adult workers, 79% of workers reported having work-related stress with 3 in 5 employees reporting negative impacts from work-related stress. Healthcare workers have experienced a uniquely hard past couple of years as frontline workers during the pandemic. A 

 study reported that more than 70% of healthcare workers experienced symptoms of anxiety and depression with 38% showing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. So, how do we learn to destress?

Everyone has experienced stress in their lives however chronic stress, or “a consistent sense of feeling pressured and overwhelmed over a long period of time,” according to Yale Medicine, can become a health concern. Over time, chronic stress can lead to more serious health problems so it is important to try to identify potential stressors in your life. Here is a list of common workplace stressors:

Additional stressors may include the death of a loved one, divorce, financial problems, chronic illness/injury, or unexpected life events.

Stress can manifest in the body in different ways. Stress hormones can wear down your body causing increased aging and illness. Other physical signs may be headaches, fatigue, difficulty sleeping or concentrating, upset stomach, and irritability.

Self-care is any intentional activity to provide ourselves with physical and mental well-being and is important in learning how to handle stress. Learning how to manage your stress levels is hard and will look different for each person. Choosing what works best for you is based on your goals, motivation, and lifestyle. Self-care is important for everyone but especially for healthcare workers who spend all day caring for others. Reducing stress levels through self-care can help a nurse provide compassion, improve the quality of care, and is even recommended by the American Nurses Association in its Code of Ethics.

It is often hardest to practice self-care when you need it most. You may not feel like it is a priority but it is crucial to maintain personal physical and mental health. As healthcare providers, it is important that you look after your needs so that you can continue to take care of others. While all healthcare providers face stress and uncertainty we each have our own realities and experiences so it is important that you do not compare your self-care to others.

When life gets stressful, sometimes you need more than self-care. If you are feeling like you may need some extra help, here are some resources to look into.

As a healthcare worker, you may be exposed to additional and unique forms of stress. Once you recognize that you are feeling stressed, consider what actions you can take to cope with the situation. Remember that even small acts of self-care can make big differences in your life. Working on ways to address stress and combat them can help you live your best life. According to Nerd Wallet, a 401(k) is a retirement saving and investing plan that employers offer. This plan allows you to contribute money directly from your paycheck into the funds you choose and helps you save for retirement. These funds are then given a tax break for being part of your 401(k) contribution. Depending on the plan you have these tax breaks may come when you contribute money or when you withdraw the money for retirement.

By contributing to a 401(k) plan you can save on your federal income taxes. Since contributions to your 401(k) are taken straight out of your paycheck before taxes, your total taxable income decreases, which means you owe less in income taxes. These pre-tax contributions get tax-deferred until your retirement when you decide to withdraw them. And your contributions are automatic which makes saving simple and effortless!

You get to control how much you want to put into your account and you have the flexibility to change your contributions levels whenever you see fit. Furthermore, your previous savings belong to you and you can transfer them straight to Principal so you get to keep any previous retirement plan earnings you had.

The earlier you set up your 401(k) the quicker your money can grow. Your savings can also collect compound interest. This is when you earn interest on the principal amount of your investment plus any accumulated interest. This can have a big impact on long-term investments and can be powerful when it comes to retirement.

Non-stipend wages; i.e. wages earned from time worked (or on-call) are eligible for your 401(k) contributions, however, housing, meals, and incidental per diem stipends are not eligible wages. Of your eligible wages, Nomad clinicians can contribute up to 100% of their eligible wages. If you decide to change your contributions- no worries! Nomad clinicians can change their contributions as frequently as they want. Once you make a contribution change you should account for a 1-2 week delay so Principal can correct your contributions with Paycom.

Nomad also offers employer matching for your 401(k) savings. Travelers who have been with Nomad for at least 12 months and have completed at least 1000 service hours are eligible to have their contributions matched. The 12 month period starts from your 

 assignment start date, so if you’d like to take a break between assignments, your eligibility won’t be impacted. Once you qualify, Nomad will match 50% of the first 3% of contributions, and this employer match vests immediately.

Saving for retirement may seem scary but it doesn’t have to be. There are a lot of unknowns when it comes to the future but your retirement is something that can be easier to predict. It can be painless to set up money to contribute to your 401(k)- even if it’s a very small amount- and watch your savings grow over time. Black nurses are a critical part of the nursing industry. While the US census reports the population as 13.4% Black, this is not reflected in the health care industry. The 2020 National Nursing Workforce Survey found that only 6% of the RN workforce identify as Black.

America’s overall health and clinical professions depend on the continuous promotion of diversity in education, career growth, and employment.

While there is a long history of injustice in American healthcare systems, there is also a long history of courageous Black nurses fighting these injustices. Throughout the 19th-century nurses like Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first Black professional nurse, and Estelle Massey Riddle Osborne, the first Black nurse to earn a nursing education master’s degree, have pioneered change for today’s nurses.

Diversity in medicine is crucial to providing quality care for patients. The United States is more diverse than it has ever been, however that reality is not reflected in the medical industry. Increased representation in healthcare can lead to increased comfort levels, trust, creativity, communication, and enhanced understanding with reduced health disparities.

 When a patient receives care from someone from their own racial or ethnic background they are more likely to utilize preventive care according to the publication of the Institute of Medicine’s 

 report. This is why it is imperative that more of America’s health care system includes Black nursing professionals.

How can the healthcare industry increase cultural diversity?

An important factor in creating a more diverse healthcare industry is increasing diversity in healthcare education. An 

 of graduates in baccalaureate nursing programs identified as Black/African American individuals. Additionally, the national center for education statistics found that only 

 of Black college students graduated from a four-year program within the first six years of enrollment compared to 

 of Hispanic students. This lack of diversity not only exists within the student body but also in the educators. in 2019, the AAMC found that only 

 of medical school faculty are Black or African American.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing has 

 and launched the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Group in 2018 to provide guidance to schools on how to increase diversity in their programs. This group works with schools, academic nursing groups, and the nursing workforce to create networking events, forums, and mentorship programs addressing diversity opportunities. The AACN also offers assistance to schools seeking diversity-based funding such as the Nursing Workforce Diversity program, the All of Us Research program, or the Nursing Workforce Diversity Grants.

Promoting diversity can be implemented throughout the people and styles of hiring, management, scheduling, communication, and social environments of your workplace. It is also important to make patient-facing adaptions like changing clinic hours to increase patient access, providing information about different payment options, or making service adjustments to meet the needs of your local patient community.

Luckily there are organizations that are working towards a brighter future for nursing. Here is a list of organizations focused on changing the medical industry into a more welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.

The Society of Black Academic Surgeons was founded in 1989 to address underrepresented minority surgeons in the US. The org offers mentorship and community for diverse surgeons in the field.

Formed in 1971, the National Black Nurses Association works to educate children about nursing and other health care disciplines, offers scholarships, and provides mentorship programs.

Starting in 2015, Project Diversify Medicine has been a space for Black doctors to have conversations about their experiences. The org’s social media platform helps underrepresented doctors get into medical school.

Black representation in the medical field is more important than ever. Over the past two years, we have seen how the coronavirus pandemic has disproportionately 

 Black Americans. Better health care for the Black community is crucial and committing to promoting diversity in health care providers has never been more relevant. With more Black nurses in the field, the industry can better address and implement solutions to advance diversity. As we celebrate Black History Month let’s think about how to fight racism in medicine and address the lack of representation in the medical field.

How To Find Your Nursing Specialty

Are you a nurse or a male nurse? Have you ever thought about why everyone feels the need to specify when a nurse is male? There is a complex history surrounding gender norms in nursing. Let's dive in. 

Nursing is a crucial and necessary profession that should reflect the diverse population it serves. However, the profession experiences a complex gender imbalance fueled by bias, power, privilege, sexism, economics, and stereotypes. In 2019, male Registered Nurses made up a little more than 12% of RNs according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This is a significant increase from 1970 when only 2.7% of RNs were men. While nursing has been a historically feminine career choice, the standard of diversity in nursing is changing and modernizing.

Nursing requires both analytical science skills as well as caregiving skills, and there is no gender predisposition to utilizing these skills. When justifying why nursing has been a prominently female-driven industry many cite the false stereotype that women are more nurturing. This stereotype is deep-rooted in both healthcare and society, and its misrepresentations continually harm all gender identities in healthcare.

Looking back, men have always been nurses. In fact, men were among the first documented nurses in India, Ancient Rome, and Europe. In the United States, men served as nurses during the Spanish-American War and the Civil War. In 1901, men were no longer allowed to serve as nurses, and the Army Nurse Corps became exclusively female. In 1955, the first Army Nurse Corps male officer became a nurse however, that effort was not reflected throughout the industry. Today, the stigma of nursing as a female profession can be seen in pop culture and the title "male nurse".

Media portals of medical professionals shape how society views these jobs. Maybe you've seen 

, where the main character's profession as a nurse is a point of ridicule. Or maybe you're a fan of popular shows like ER, Scrubs, and Grey's Anatomy. These shows continue to feature more men as doctors or surgeons while women are more likely to be shown as nurses. Additionally, the trope of a sexualized female nurse (often seen in Halloween costumes or movie characters) furthers gender norms in the industry.

It's important to address how increasing diversity in nursing changes the industry for non-male practitioners as well. Currently in nursing, despite the lack of male nurses, there is still a significant salary gender gap. In 2013 men in nursing averaged annual earnings of $60,700 while women earned $51,100 per year, according to the American Community Survey (ACS). 

 has created initiatives to increase male enrollment in nursing programs. The 

 continually works toward the expansion of men within nursing by minimizing gender focus and instead focusing on knowledge and competence in nursing. Organizations like the 

 also support the diversification of the profession and advocate for the profession to more closely mirror the general population. Additionally, schools like the University of Dundee are launching campaigns such as, "

" to encourage more male applicants to nursing courses.

As society continues to progress, the more outdated and strict gender roles that once tainted the nursing industry are slowly fading. Overall, more nursing programs are working to help address gender bias in their profession. By improving media portrayals of nursing, teaching faculty to be aware of gender bias, addressing negative clinical rotations, and implementing mentorship programs the healthcare industry is working to improve the nursing experience for everyone.

Health care facilities prepare to follow state vaccination mandates after an additional 84,500 Covid-19 deaths in August and September. Facilities are faced with forcing nurses to resign if they do not agree to receive full vaccinations.

 still not fully vaccinated. Facilities are faced with forcing nurses to resign if they do not agree to receive full vaccinations. These requirements are expected to further current medical staffing shortages, even for hospitals with high vaccination rates.

New York Implements Vaccine Mandate and Brings in the National Guard

Monday, Sept. 27, New York State required all healthcare workers to be vaccinated following the state's vaccination mandate. Governor Kathy Hochul declared a 

 and called on the National Guard to fill staffing shortages across the state.

Of the state's 650,000 hospital and nursing home workers, 92% have received at least one dose of a vaccine according to state officials. The mandate does not allow for weekly testing in place of vaccination or religious exemptions, although those who have applied for religious exemptions are permitted to work until Oct. 12. 

The state of emergency also entails a crisis operations center for health care facilities and waived licensing requirements. This allows workers from outside of the state to work in New York and waives the registration fee to speed up the process. The mandate does not apply to medical professionals who work in state agencies that care for inmates or disabled and mentally ill patients.

The days before the vaccination deadline, New York saw some of the highest rates of vaccination among health care workers nationally. However, lawsuits and angry protests against the mandates in New York serve as a reminder of health care workers who are likely to resign as a result of the mandate.

Other states have imposed similar requirements for vaccinations. In Houston at Methodist Hospital, 

 following a vaccine requirement. In Detroit, Henry Ford Health System reached a 

 after implementing a mandate. California, Maine, Rhode Island, and Connecticut are also implementing mandates for healthcare workers. For a full list of health care vaccine mandates by state 

Nurses have shared that while they aren't convinced they should get vaccinated, they don't want to lose their jobs. This is a positive sign for Biden's planned federal vaccination mandate for health care workers. President Joe Biden signed an executive order compelling about 100 million Americans to meet vaccine requirements. The Biden administration will also require more than 

 at hospitals and facilities that partake in Medicare, Medicaid, social programs, and programs for disabled and older Americans to get vaccinations.

While some nurses have left their jobs in protest of vaccine mandates many others have left due to exhaustion.

Facing staffing shortages, many facilities have had to activate emergency staffing plans, call in volunteers, and move personnel to cover shifts. It has also brought additional strain to health care workers who are asked to take on a larger workload in response to facility staffing shortages.

About 7.3% of nurses in the United States identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino, representing about 135,600 RNs and 51,800 LPNs,

Hispanic nurses, those who speak Spanish and/or are descended from Spanish-speaking populations, are more likely to be found in the West South Central (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas), Pacific (Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington) and Mountain areas (Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming).

As the number of Hispanic nurses grows, so does their impact on the field of nursing. The following are some Hispanic nurse trailblazers everyone should know, including nurses who helped pave the way decades ago and ones who are making their impact now:

 helped found the National Association of Hispanic Nurses in 1975 after she felt the American Nurses Association wasn't meeting the needs of Hispanic nurses. A native of Panama, she wanted to help Hispanic nurses secure their education and serve their community. She started her career in San Antonio, which, despite having a large Hispanic population, had few Hispanic nurses. Murillo-Rohde continued her education in New York, working her way to a doctorate and a federal job reviewing grants, but also found no Latina nurses in her areas of research and public policy.

Murillo-Rohde served as faculty, professor, and dean of nursing at SUNY's School of Nursing and received other honors such as a fellowship from the American Academy of Nursing. A scholarship and award for Hispanic nurses are named in her honor.

 was one of the founding members of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees before serving in the United States Army Nurse Corps as a captain. In 1974, he became the first Mexican-American registered nurse in the U.S. to earn a doctorate and went on to serve on the board of directors for District 8 of the Texas Nurses Association and became its first Hispanic and male president.

Gonzalez later chaired the Department of Nursing Education at San Antonio College, where he helped develop programs that would allow nurses to complete their degrees in the evening. Under his leadership, the department also had one of the highest minority and male student enrollments and the largest number of qualified minority faculty in the U.S.

 received her bachelor's and master's degrees before becoming the only Hispanic Public Health Supervisor while working in Los Angeles. She was also the first Hispanic nurse to be appointed health administrator in the Department of Health, Education and Welfare and the first Mexican-American chief nurse consultant in the Office of Maternal & Child Health.

In 1985, she assisted the surgeon general with the Hispanic Health Initiative on the west coast and also served on the Task Force for Minority Health. Villaescusa went on to serve as president of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses.

 has earned her doctorate and works as a nurse practitioner, providing care to about 2,500 patients through the Montefiore Medical Center Infectious Diseases Clinic in New York City. She's the HIV-HCV (hepatitis C virus) program coordinator and evaluates the clinic's patients who have both HIV and HCV.

The vast majority of her patients are African-American and Hispanic, and the clinic provides a multidisciplinary approach that includes psychiatrists, dermatologists and nursing staff.

 is an assistant nursing professor at DePaul University and earned a doctorate in nursing science. She has served as president of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses-Illinois Chapter and has worked to support and increase the number of Hispanic nurses.

She has earned several awards and served as a leader in many organizations in an effort to address health disparities within the Latino community.
